Hi! I’m Sandy Staley, a certified Polestar Pilates Studio and Matwork practitioner, Garuda Matwork, Chair, Brick and Foam Roller teacher.
I’ve been teaching Pilates since gaining my certification in 2012 and have been practising for more than 20 years.
I have also recently attended a 40-hour Restorative Yoga course, as well as completed a 25-hour Gravity Flexibility Yoga Teacher Training course, both certified by Yoga Alliance.
In the beginning
Having spent over 25 years working as a PA in London (at the BBC, UBS, ERBD and JP Morgan), I felt ready for a career change. I’d had enough of the daily commute to a high-pressured office environment, working on busy trading floors and spending my days stuck at a desk. I knew I wanted to do something in the complementary therapy field, so I looked into Aromatherapy, Massage Therapy, Reflexology, and Yoga teaching, when suddenly, one sunny afternoon in Caterham everything changed.
I decided to go to a local Pilates class which was instructed by the amazing Diane Nye who specialises in Movement Rehabilitation and Functional Fitness. In that one class Diane taught me everything I needed to know to spark my interest in Pilates: I was suddenly aware of not just HOW I should move my body, but WHY I should do it, and WHAT the benefits were.
It clicked. It made sense… and that’s what I love about Pilates, as a fitness method, it just makes sense.
I discovered that by strengthening the core muscle groups of the body (abdominals, obliques, spinal and gluteal) you can work to support the back and spine which improves overall flexibility, stability and strength in the body as well as enhancing mental awareness.
Continuing the classes, I started chatting to Diane, who was also an Educator and Mentor at Polestar Pilates in London, and before I knew it I’d signed up for the Polestar Pilates Comprehensive Teacher Training Series (Studio Equipment and Matwork) working closely with her. I then followed-up my training with several courses with the inspirational James D’Silva, creator of the Garuda Workout Method in St John’s Wood, London. I loved the flow and physicality of his training courses and felt fitter and stronger after qualifying.
Now that I am teaching I can honestly say it really is an amazing job, one of the best (in my opinion!). As well as introducing me to new form of physical exercise and lifestyle, I’ve been lucky to meet some inspiring people along the way.
There’s no doubt however, that the best part of teaching is getting to share my knowledge with everyone: Pilates is for EVERY body.
